Baptism

N was baptized a couple of weeks ago on Dec. 18. He held it together great and we were very thankful so we could actually listen to our pastors and consent to the questions they were asking us. :) We have such a wonderful church family and know that they will love N as long as we are there. They will help us raise him in the Lord and teach him to be a strong christian man. My parents and Ben's mom came also. (We scheduled it this day in hopes that my little brother would be in from Texas, but his flight came in the day after the baptism.)

Praise the Lord for this precious child he has blessed us with!

He did pass out just minutes after his part was over, B was not thrilled I wanted to still take pictures with a sleeping baby in his arms. :) Ha! Pictures are important!

Easter & spiders....

Today has been a great day! Amazing God, great service, great weather.

We went to our typical 9 am service and Ben's mom joined us, then went out to lunch for mexican. I tried to clean the house some (I'm working on doing a few things a day instead of tackling the whole house lately) and went for a walk to enjoy this gorgeous day we've been given.

Grossest moments of my day: Finding the biggest spiders I've EVER seen in real life in/around my house. Seriously. Ben has been working on our yard and sprayed a new bug spray in the yard to keep fleas and ticks out for our doggies and apparently spiders hate it. I came back from my walk and saw one that was 3 inches wide with a body that was all different colors and looked like it would have babies if you stepped on it.... gag. I would have taken a picture for you except I was more worried about it eating Logan.

Anyways, still trying to get over that.

Now that Easter is here, I've been reflecting on how we did these past 40 days for lent in our goal to be less like ourselves and more like Jesus. We did manage to keep our lives iPhone game free, which was great, but we totally slacked on adding daily scripture like we had planned. Today though when I was sitting on the couch, I picked up my iPhone and thought, "Oh yeah, I can download my junk again, " and really had no desire to at all, I thought about what a waste it is/was. So I'm going to continue to work on avoiding wasting time and still work on adding daily scripture with Ben and soon to be child. We also have a new Sunday School coming up at church about having a sacred marriage and I am thinking that we will try that. We have never been active members of a Sunday School because we have been teaching it instead, but I'd really like to be part of one too. (And we will be taking time off from teaching once the baby comes).

I am so thankful for our Lord and Savior on this day and every day. I pray that the Lord will bless you and your family today and each day. Happy Easter!!

Ash Wednesday

Today is a day of turning our lives back to God and I can tell you that I am ready! These past several weeks I have felt further away from him than I would like. I've felt more discouraged and fearful than I have in the past too, and I know this is because my relationship is lacking. It's not just one thing that is keeping me from being as close as I need to be to God, but more of just everything. I've let my daily distractions become an excuse to be lazy with my relationship and I'm paying for it. I hadn't taken the time to plug in my ipod and listen to worship music in over a month, although the past few days I finally have because I've really needed it. I just feel down and know that Jesus is the only thing that can pull me out of this funk.

Lent begins today and Ben and I participate in Ash Wednesday at our church (United Methodist). I am really looking forward to the Ash Wednesday service tonight to rededicate our lives to Jesus Christ and work on really listening to Him, becoming closer and remembering who it is we are: His children.

I've thought a lot this week about what I (and Ben) should give up that is keeping us from being close to our Lord and it is pretty easy, and silly. Its our iphones. Well, more so the junk on them. I can't believe I'm saying this, but we both play solitaire on our iphone or words with friends all the time! Its out of sheer boredom (laziness!) and it is precious time that we could be devoting to worshiping and listening to God. So, we are giving up 'junk' on our iphones and going to read a passage in the bible each night as a couple. (Something that we always talk about wanting to do, but rarely make the time to do it.)

I'm not one for keeping or doing New Year's Resolutions, but when Jesus is involved in a resolution, I'm MUCH more motivated and am looking forward to growing closer to Christ during the next 40 days.

I want to encourage you to participate in Lent, even if your church may not.

Here is a list of ideas of things you could do or how to get started:

"Top Ten List: THINGS YOU CAN TRY FOR THE LENTEN SEASON

10. Try an electronic fast. Give up TV, Guitar Hero, texting, tweeeting, e-mail and all things electronic for one day every week. (or everyday of Lent!) Use the time to read & pray.

9. Start a prayer rhythm. Say a prayer every time you brush your teeth, hear an ambulance, or check your e-mail. Before you text someone, pray for them.

8. Read one chapter in the Bible each day. (Matthew's a good book to start with. Psalms, too.)

7. Forgive someone who doesn't deserve it (maybe even yourself.)

6. Give up soft drinks, fast food, tea or coffee. Give the money you save to help folks in Haiti or others in crisis.

5. Create a daily quiet time. Spend 30 minutes a day in silence and prayer.

4. Cultivate a life of gratitude. Write someone a thank you letter each week and be aware of how many people have helped you along the way.

3. Be kind to someone each day.

2. Pray for others you see as you walk to and from classes or drive to and from work.

1. Volunteer one hour or more each week with a local shelter, tutoring program, nursing home, prison ministry or a Habitat for Humanity project."

The perfect prescription

I have made it all the way through the weekend and I have to say this has probably been the best weekend of the year. After making some decisions about handling my life better, I am very relieved!

Yesterday B and I went to the pool (he left without me once, but after a few phone calls was back to pick me up, lucky duck). He collected rocks for our never-ending yard projects and I laid in a raft and restarted reading The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks that I have been trying to read for 11 months. I successfully made it the further than I had gotten all year yesterday!

We came home and intended on cooking on the grill and being lazy, but my neighbor stopped by and was driving to the movies to see Sex and the City 2 with some friends and invited me along. It was great to go see a movie although you can read my actual review of it here.

Today was church and Sunday School. I had a really great lesson planned for today and only one kid showed up so I had him join with the high school class and I took myself on over to Target while B was in his new Sunday School class (it's a men's group on the power of prayer I think). I met my mom for lunch and went to the movies again! Now I'm home thinking about going back to Target to buy a Food Saver. But I want your opinion first. Have any of you actually used one of these?

My need is for produce to last longer. In trying to lessen my stress, I think it would help if I could go to the store for lettuce, veggies and fruit less. Last week I didn't eat a salad ALL week because my lettuce went bad and I didn't want to make the trip all the way to the grocery store for just lettuce. The FoodSaver says it will help lettuce stay good for 2-3 weeks instead of 2-3 days. What do you think?

Anyways, this weekend has been great and I really feel ready for this week. Knowing that I have less on my plate this week along with still more job possibilities is good. Prayers for these jobs and interviews. I am very ready for God to reveal my place, but I'm still waiting.

In the meantime, this song has been playing a lot on my ipod lately and I thought I'd share:

and because of the wonderful things he does...

I'm back.

To myself that is. Yesterday was a small stumble in the road of faith, but I'm back today. I really did cry out yesterday to God to give me strength and motivation to keep going and he did not hold back.

Today was the end-of-the-year counselor meeting for the county I am interning with and when I arrived I was greeted by several smiling counselor faces that have met me or know me all asking how the job searching was going and telling me of the positions that they have 'heard' will be open. A few of them told me exactly who to call and what to do when they get posted. This gave me hope that there WILL be more job opportunities and that people are rooting for me!

Then I get home and I have several lovely encouraging comments waiting for me in my email box from you guys, who are wonderful! Thank you so much for your prayers through this, I know they are working and definitely keeping my spirits up!

I also received an email from a good friend in a neighboring school district who sent an email directly to a principal on my behalf to recommend me for a position. It was so eloquently worded and she copied her principal and a big-wig at the board too! I almost cried!

God has definitely encouraged and re-motivated me today that the position he has for me is still out there and I have to stay positive!

I also have the hardest working husband I know.

Seriously, while I'm in here blogging applying for jobs he is outside spreading 1 ton of mulch (did I tell you about our anti-poison ivy project?)

When I looked outside at what he was doing I did feel bad enough that I swept the kitchen (overdue by 5 or 6 weeks) and faux-vacuumed the den. Talk about lazy! That is the one thing this job searching has done to me. I am lazy and just want to eat everything in sight. I have picked back up with my walking even when I REALLY don't want to though. I know its important to keep my weight off for baby making sake (PCOS does not do well with weight gain), but I really am a compulsive eater lately.

The good thing is that we are down to the bare bones in the kitchen, so I'm running out of things to eat. Whew! I'm down to a frozen box of uncrustables I got for free a few months ago.

Fearlessly Feminine

Welcome home!

I just got back from the retreat in Destin!!
It was such a wonderful weekend with strong christian women that are great examples of kindness, genuineness, patience, compassion, dignity, love.... all things God wants from me and what I want to strive to be!
My Aunt Treecie invited my cousin Annie and I to go down to this women's retreat sponsored by her church based out of Tallahassee, Fla.

The speaker was Jani Ortlund and our topic was fearlessly feminine. To give up our fears, anxieties and restlessness and become a strong woman of God.

Psalm 62: 1 "My soul finds rest in God alone." (VERY appropriate lately!)

It really was a great topic to remind me about servant-hood. Our culture today is very self-serving, self-pleasing and self-centered. If it feels good, do it. This is not a servanthood mindset and she encouraged us to practice self-control and strive to be less of ourselves and more of Him. Also, we talked about how to be beautiful in God's standards instead of our own worldly standards which is wonderful to hear.

Proverbs 31:30 "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised!"

One of the things she mentioned that I really loved was that we are not called to separate ourselves from the our culture even though it is often disastrous and filthy. We are not called to be a christian separated from all others and this has been something I had been struggling with, especially in regards to raising children.

I've often wondered, how can you keep a child pure, how can you ensure that you raise that child of God correctly unless you separate him/her from the rest of the awful world, right?! Well, apparently I'm very wrong (as usual :). She encouraged us to embrace our culture, embrace why God chose for us to live in this day, this time, this place and use it to our advantage, use our femininity to our advantage. It is a tool that God has given to use that can do great things. So instead of separating ourselves, we are to minister within this culture, be a Godly woman in this culture.

To say that you don't like the culture you live in and avoid it, is to say if you don't like smog, stop breathing. -Michael Medveb

And because I could go on and on about what I loved or was a little confused about, to focus on just one more thing that really caught me:

"Sinners tend to sin in response to being sinned against."

How will you respond?

*******************************

On my way home I called one of my best friends to tell her about the weekend and how I was reminded to keep serving, to keep ministering, even when I'm tired, exhausted, broken down. I told her this weekend revived me, and she had a wonderful thing to say. She said when we are who Christ wants us to be, striving to live for him and when we are sinned against but respond with kindness, compassion and Christ's love, THIS is when those without Christ will start to wonder what we have that makes us that way and why it is that we are not responding the way they are used to, with anger or resentment.

My family is very difficult to minister to, but I have been renewed and refreshed and am ready to continue to try and to try better. I want to be able to be with them in heaven for all eternity and that is more important than getting mad.

Words of Wisdom

I'm avoiding closing my eyes and spending time alone with my brain right now.

Instead... I'm catching up on blogs:

"Faith is believing the Word of God and ACTING upon it. (Even the devil and the demons BELIEVE in God ...........it's not enough to just believe)." - Kelly's Korner

Acting on my faith is so hard sometimes. It brings me to tears like today. But, I can't lose sight of knowing that God has prepared this path for me. His plan is so much better than mine. I've tried to do it alone before and it is way too scary of a place without the Lord.

"I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears." Psalm 34:4 - Made in Secret

I know God continues to show me his plan. Its my job to open my eyes and see it. God happens around me every second of every day, but I don't always recognize it. Sometimes I don't notice him in the person at the grocery line who lets me in front of them, or in the restaurant manager that helped me to my car with the food, I let those moments happen and don't even realize the blessings or lessons that God is bringing to me. Its the little things that slip past me sometimes that God has placed in my path, but if I will place my fears in him, confess and give them to him, I know he will take them and provide for me a plan that is perfect.

"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." 1 Peter 5:7 NeedHim.org

Amen.

Women's Retreat

I checked my email yesterday when I got home from school and saw one from my aunt Treecie. She has invited to host me and two of my cousins (we are very close) at a women's retreat in Sandestin, Florida for the weekend before my birthday in April!!!

What a wonderful birthday present!

It is the weekend of April 23-25 and the speaker will be: Jani Ortlund. She is the author of the book Fearlessly Feminine. “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised”! Proverbs 31:30.

I'm thrilled because this is something I've wanted to do for such a long time. I really loved retreats when I was in high school. I always felt completely refreshed and ready to take on everything again. Its been YEARS since I've been on one though. (It also sounds wonderful that it happens to be in Sandestin!) :)

I am really glad it is only women too. As much as I love learning and growing spiritually with Ben, he and I have two completely different learning styles. (I've learned this the hard way by signing us up for the Financial Peace University Bible Study). I take notes and come prepared ready to learn and stays focused for all over 4 minutes and then starts kicking my chair or tapping my arm every couple of minutes (ADD anyone?)...

This is such a fun surprise and wonderful blessing. I'm SO excited!

Blessings

I have mentioned this a few times before regarding my school and how every door that needed to be opened was opened and as my great friend said tonight, they were also HELD open!

Well I just wanted to share because this has been a very rewarding, but tough journey at times, especially lately.

A few weeks ago my internship supervisor asked if could come 5 days a week soon because testing starts and its a very overwhelming time! I also thought it would be good for me, because I felt like I wasn't getting as much in-school time as I needed due to training and such outside the school too. I want to be able to do both! Well, I came home and was very nervous to bring this up to Ben. Financially I just didn't know how we could do it. Granted, I'd already dropped down to only 2 paid days a week, and we'd managed okay thus far, but losing those 2 days would be pretty hard. It would mean no more internet or cable and no more carb-free diet (that produce is just expensive!)

I brought it up when I got home and Ben wasn't as against it as I thought! He just said that if this was what I needed to do to make sure I had a job in the future than he supported it. So we decided to just pray that God would give us an answer over the next week or so. (Keep in mind I really don't want to leave my current paid job... I've been there for 3.5 wonderful years and really enjoy the people I work with, its the one thing in my life right now that I am sure of and comfortable with.)

The next day (Saturday) I went off to my 3rd job at my parent's store. I am also not being paid for this job, because my parents just bought a paint store and are trying to get it up off the ground. I am blessed enough to understand the books, taxes, insurance, etc. and have volunteered my time to help them get things running. While I was there that following Saturday I had a minor breakdown because things just weren't getting done while I wasn't there and its tough driving an hour and a half up there once a week and doing all that needs to be done. My dad said to me: "Can I please just hire you so you can come up here every weekend and get us really moving in the right direction."

Was this my answer?!
I mean surely it is not this clear cut, right?

I was a little shocked because this was the last place I expected to find money or a part time job to support us. I hadn't even told my dad about my dilemma or prayers.

When I left work that day, I called my long-time best friend and ran this by her to be sure I wasn't just imagining it and she confirmed that she thought this was God really answering my prayer.

Well, I was pretty pleased and thankful that God has been providing no matter what I needed and I was really focusing on having faith that he is guiding us on his path. But then attitudes started to change a bit. That next week I started hearing from more than one person that I was not going to be qualified to be a school counselor. That I wouldn't be able to handle testing material, that I wasn't going to be certified. On and on. Now, this went on for several days and truly exhausted me. It was discouraging and stressed me out, but I continued to pray. I prayed for God to give me guidance and calm me down because I know that he has gotten me this far for a reason.

Well a few days after that Ben comes home from work and tells me that he met with a principal of one of the local school systems and how the principal told Ben that he didn't understand why I was going through with school counseling when I wouldn't be able to be certified without having a teaching certificate, I would probably not find a job, etc.

Ben (no offense to him) ate this up. He came home that night and was a wreck, panicked about what this man told him. He caught me off guard because he was the last person I expected to have to defend my job/career/education to (Trust me, he's heard all the ins and outs of my educational trials, I thought he would be pretty educated on the topic!)

This was when I realized something. I realized this was the devil pulling at me and when he tried for 2 weeks to bring me down off my confident cloud of trust and faith, he went after Ben. He found Ben's one fear, his weakest spot (that I will not have a job after graduation) and dove right in.

Amidst all of this I was still praying and really crying out about what I needed to do regarding all of this school and interning, if that was really my answer, why then was it so hard and was this all what I really needed to do?

I went back and forth, back and forth. Was this my answer?? So I went to my real job that Tuesday and was quite upset about all of it. I brought it to one of my bosses with a lot of tears and he was as kind as could be assuring me that if this was where God was guiding me, we'll make it work. At the end of the day I put in my 6-week notice. (VERY sad...) Then, this past Tuesday, I told my other boss (who had been briefed by my 1st boss... his brother) and I was back in tears again, but he promised we'd get through this and things were okay.

Whew....

Well today I went to my internship and not only got to sit in on some very important meetings but was also able to visit with some kids too! And then I see I have a missed call and a text from Ben that says, "Call me as soon as you are possibly able to." I'm thinking... Oh great, who died? I call and call and call and he doesn't answer. Great... back to meetings. Then he called back, so I slipped out quickly to see what the heck was going on and guess what....

BEN GOT A PROMOTION!!!! I mean if that is not God saying, 'Yes you are working in the right direction', I don't know what is! Since we have turned our lives, finances, jobs and everything over to God, we have been truly truly blessed. I never imagined that we'd get this far and be so taken care of, but I think God is honoring our faithfulness right now and saying keep up the great work.

I know there are days on top of the mountain and days in the valley, where I'm sure I'll be back to shortly, but its those days trudging through the valley I learn and grow and become stronger... so I look forward to those as much as I look forward to moments like this, when God assures me that He is in control. He will provide. He has a better plan for me than I could ever imagine.

So currently, I'm working out the remainder of my 1st job and praying that God will just continue to guide me and I'm trusting that he has a place for me after graduation, wherever that may be!!

*And lastly - snow day tomorrow! :)

Cardboard Testimonies

I came across this video on a blog today and wouldn't be doing you justice if I did not share.

"At birth, we begin wearing labels that identify us... And as we grow older, whether written by the cruelty of others, or our own poor choices, those labels can become more personal, hurtful, and even outright devastating. The promise Jesus Christ makes is that His mercy will restore our hurt and shame, and give us a new label...a label that identifies us as made complete, whole, forgiven, and restored through being adopted into His family." - West Ridge Church

If you watched the first and were in awe as much as I was... here is another:

Do you have a cardboard testimony? I read one of the comments under these videos on youtube and it said, 'These dark secrets have been forgiven so there is no shame." Wow... these are very emotional videos and I just don't know that I would have the courage to show the world MY cardboard testimony. Would you?

Its 11pm, do you know where your kids are?

I am rarely up this late, but this is the ONLY time I can get on blogger lately!

I'm stressed, I'm overwhelmed and pulled to my limit. And I tell you what, God knows this.

Today I went to a conference where I heard MANY speakers and politicians... some talked about kids and a lot talked about themselves. One speaker went over the top though and I wanted to share a little bit about him and how God knew I was nearing my limit.

His name is John Croyle. All you Alabamians out there of course know of him b/c he has a very famous son, Brodie Croyle, former quarterback for the Crimson Tide, and now quarterback for a Pro Team... (seriously I should know which one). Anywho... John Croyle also played for the University of Alabama back in the 70s under Coach Bear Bryant. From what I heard today he almost went pro, but had a heart for underprivileged, neglected and abused children. Well, you can read all the details if you click his name above, but fast forward to today where he owns a Ranch to raise these children. He and his wife have raised over something like 1600 kids without ANY government funding.

Well, he is an amazing speaker and talked about how God placed him where he is and he has a very strong faith. What I loved about today were his rules or promises he tells the children when they come to live at the Ranch. He said if you follow through on these promises to your children, you will raise a successful child of God.

He tells them all:
1. I love you.
2. I will NEVER lie to you.
3. I will take care of you until you are grown.
4. There are boundaries, do not cross them.

He says by these 4 things you will prove to these children that you care, are dependable, are trustworthy and there is discipline. He said every single child wakes up every day wanting to know if you still love them, no matter if they are adopted, biological, foster, etc. They all want to know if you will still love them if they screw up. Will you still be there if they stumble and fall....?

Seriously, this man and his speech was amazing. He went on to talk about our purposes in life and how God calls us to bear fruit with the purpose he gave us & how to do just that. This is what I needed to hear today of all days. I needed to hear that I am doing all this for a reason beyond myself, beyond my colleagues & professors... I am doing this for the children that need me, for the children that God will place in my life to serve. I have been stressed, intimidated, nervous, worried.... all for what? If I trust God has placed me where I am today, what is there to fear? I need to take a few deep breaths and keep moving forward because I would surely disappoint if I turned my back this far in.

So I am still tired, but I'm ready and eager. I know God still has his plan. I pray that he continues to shine a light on it so I can follow. I pray that he will use me to further his plan.

I took a lot of notes today along with a few sermons this past week that I would love to share. If I could ever end up with all the notes, computer, computer cords and be awake at the same time... I'll get them up here.

I'm tired of being a tug boat.

I really hate complaining, especially on my blog. A passage I read a few weeks ago has been weighing on me for awhile, and I'm trying, I really am! But I am just. plain. tired. I'm tired of a lot of things today. I'm tired of 'low' carbs. I'm tired of closing other people's snacks so they don't get stale. I'm tired of reading directions so other people don't have to. I'm tired of still being in school. I'm tired of working 3 jobs, and only getting paid for one. I'm tired of being everyone's tug boat.

Do you know what a tug boat does? I don't really either.

Except I saw one once, it pulled a massive luxury cruise ship away from a dock I was standing on. Something small... something no one thinks about or remembers even exists... something used to get the rich, luxurious cruise ship back on track.... no thank yous screaming from the deck to that boat... just expected to work when it is its time and it does... it pulls and pulls that massive ship away from the dock so all the cruisers can get back going to the islands and get back to their party. What does a tug boat do when it isn't pulling the cruise ship?

Anyways, I feel like a tug boat. I feel like I'm pulling and pulling and sometimes I need the cruise ship to turn on its dang motor and help me out!!!!! But then I remember that I asked. I asked to be a servant. In fact, I'm pretty sure I ask at least 3 or 4 times a day to be a servant, and maybe this is it! So if God is just answering my prayers.... Why am I so tired?? Which brings me back to why I hate complaining, especially on my blog.

Let me try again.... I am so thankful it is just Saturday. I am thankful I am in school. I am thankful I have church tomorrow. I am so thankful I have DVR and can skip that awful vampire farming humans movie trailer, ick! I am thankful the Biggest Loser started back this week. I am so thankful for the 'blog friends' I have encountered lately (can you just encounter a friend?). I am thankful to have heat.

Most of all, I am thankful that Jesus died on a cross so my soul could be saved. I am. so thankful.

Philippians 2:14-16

14Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe 16as you hold out the word of life—in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.

Thought I'd share...

I was talking with my supervisor at school today about how thankful I am that God placed me at McAdory Middle School for my internship. Not only do I have two amazing supervisors, but they are both LPCs (Licensed Professional Counselors) which is a rarity among school counselors. So they aren't in school counseling just to answer phones, change schedules, but to actually be counselors, to make a difference in these kids lives. They both have also done private practice on the side also. I just can't express enough how great it is to be able to learn from these two women.

I am so thankful to God that he walks with me each and every day. I pray that I continue to learn and grow as a christian, but it is amazing to see God's work. I never thought I'd get to the point that I am today, and to be so close to graduating. When I thought about going to school, I didn't quite know how it would work, how I'd pay for it, get to school, etc., but Ben and I prayed and prayed about it. Well, first I passed the GRE and was accepted into UAB after the most tormenting interview. My office I work for was moved downtown from Hoover, less than 5 minutes from UAB, awfully convenient for class. The counseling program became CACREP accredited (allowing me to graduate as a school counselor, not only as an agency counselor). All of these were major bumps in the road that Ben and I continued to pray about and trust that God would show me his plan and each one has worked its way out to get me where I am today. I just am so thankful that God has kept with me and shown me his path and I pray that I continue to do his will through it all.

Just thought I'd share.

Life Support

Yes, 2 in one day.
Some of you may have already gotten an email about this, but I missed church at Pleasant Hill Sunday by oversleeping and remembered that Church of the Highlands had their services live online. So Ben hooked my computer up to the tv and we watched it live. It was amazing! Its about marriage and relationships, but I think it would be beneficial to anyone in a relationship or wanting to be in one. Everyone needs to watch this message.

Its the one from October 11.
Let me know what you think! :)
